Becoming a Recognized Humanity+ Chapter

Chapters of Humanity+ are local or semi-local groups affiliated with Humanity+. Chapters are created by members of Humanity+ to establish distinct goals and projects that contribute to the Mission of Humanity+.These goals and projects are an extension of the educational aim of Humanity+ and can bring in new ways of approaching these aims. Some local groups might want to take on issues of local longevity and anti-aging practices, others might want to establish charitable projects that help communities in need, while others might want to offer adventurous and fun-filled trips to SF movies, museums, or skydiving!  Groups can focus on social, economic, and political topics that are core to transhumanism and also the arts and entertainment, historical and current science fiction connections. There is really no one way or right way for groups and we welcome new ideas that support the mission to flourish.

What is required?

Chapters of Humanity+ must be created by a member in good standing. To be recognized as an active Humanity+ chapter, groups must appoint a leader or liaison to Humanity+, and send an email to info@humanityplus.org, defining the chapter and the geographic area to be served (if any; chapters may also serve occupational or interest groups). To start a chapter, please go to: Start a Chapter – Humanity+. Please email us with your information.

Becoming a Recognized Humanity+ Chapter

Members of Humanity+ have an opportunity to suggest alternative names for the satellite members’ groups. They can be Affiliates, Chapters or another name. Whichever is decided, they will all be local or semi-local groups affiliated with Humanity+ and created by members of Humanity+ to establish distinct goals and projects that contribute to the Mission of Humanity+.  For now, let’s stick with “Chapter”:

  • These goals and projects are an extension of the educational aim of Humanity+ and can bring in new ways of approaching these aims. Basics: How to Succeed as a H+ Chapter Holding Meetings or Events

  • Create an environment for success by first determining the reason for each meeting or event, assemble the people, and set up the agenda and expectations.
  • Determine what your Chapter plans to do. You can always change the purpose goals of your Chapter but start out with a specific goal: meet to discuss socio-economic-political issues within transhumanism, meet to have a fun-filled adventure, meet to host a charitable event to provide help or support of others in your community.
  • Select the appropriate venue or platform:
    • Real-time Venue
      • Restaurant, Coffee shop, home, business, library, or event location
    • Online Platform
      • Meetup, Teams, Skype, Google Hangouts, Slack, and the list goes on, but keep it simple.
    • Build your roster of attendees/participants.
    • Organize communications through a platform that is accessible:
      • Let your attendees/participants know when, where and why you are getting together through email, FB, and the list goes on, but keep it simple. Email is most direct.
    • Plan your process:
      • If your meeting is a serious discussion or debate:
        • Allow each person to speak and then open the meeting for questions and further discussion.
      • If your meeting is a fun-filled adventure or excursion:
        • Provide the location, type of cloths to wear, health hazards, and what people should bring.
      • Follow-up after your meeting or event:
        • Send out a group message to thank those who attended and offer some insights. This will help  keep people interested and wanting more!
